Savannah Young Voices Health Journalism Camp Program

On Friday afternoon, I attended the closing program for the Savannah Young Voices Journalism Camp. Thirteen of Savannah’s youth participated in this summer program where they honed their journalism skills through blogging, photography, research, and public speaking. Author, Tina A. Brown, coordinated a dynamic team to facilitate this program.
The camp, sponsored by the City of Savannah and a grant from the U.S. Department of Urban Development, was housed at the Moses Jackson Center on Savannah’s Westside. Partners like Savannah State University and AWOL teamed up to ensure that this experience was one the young people would never forget.
At the closing program, the participants received certificates for their achievement and a one-month free membership card from the YMCA. Each one received a special certificate marking his or her unique talent or trait displayed during the program:
Bobby Battle- Excellence in Service, Dedication and Support
Jasmine Berry- Best Blog
Takyah Berry- Best Biography
Anthony Butler- Most Polite
Eleasah Cunningham- Most Focused
Marquis Elam- Nest Personality
Michael Elam- Most Creative Writer
Michaela Elam- Step Up Award
Michaya Landon- Best Photographer
Shantel Leech- Best Report
De’Quan Miles- Most Likely to be a Weatherman
Malachi Rivers- Best Researcher

Kudos to all of the young people and the staff that made the program possible!
