Move over Flannery O’Connor; Here are the New Authors on the Block!

When most people think about Savannah’s great female authors, the name Flannery O’Connor usually comes to mind. Although O’Connor’s work is respected and still well-read, there are a host of other great female authors in Savannah that you need to know about.

Earlier this month, The Village Empowerment Project, a non-profit organization in Savannah, Georgia, sponsored a networking social called the Sister Girl’s Social for female authors.

Each author gave a brief summary of her book and her journey during the writing process. In addition, each author donated a copy of her book for a drawing, and ironically a few of the authors won another author’s book!

Thanks again to all of the authors who attended the Sister Girl’s Social!

Top Ladies are Truly TOPS in Service

There is an old saying that “If you want something done right, get a woman to do it.” Well, I say, “If you want something done extremely well, call the Top Ladies!” Local President, Lady Annette Mitchell, was approached to decorate the Hospice House room for a five year old boy who is non-verbal. She immediately informed the Ladies and the members of Top Teens of America, and they came together to help.

The room was decorated with the theme” Starry Night.” There were bright stars and festive lights everywhere. Such a sight is a welcomed visual to anyone unable to communicate through speech, but I am certain that this young boy thought it extra special to sleep peacefully under the stars.

Thank you Top Ladies of Distinction and Top Teens of America for continuing to serve in whatever capacity you are needed!

Labor Day Weekend Specials

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Several stores and restaurants are sponsoring special promotions for Labor Day Weekend. Two of my favorites are Starbucks (I loooooooove Starbucks!) and Plums Restaurant.

For those who love the cold treats at Starbucks, I have great news for you! From now until September 3rd, if you make a purchase of a Grande sized cold drink before 2 p.m., you can visit again after 2 p.m. and receive a second, Grande size cold drink for just $2 plus tax! For those who love the smooth taste of a caramel frap (extra caramel for me) or a strawberries and crème smoothie (my mom’s favorite), this should be music to your ears. Remember that this deal ends on September 3rd, so get yours today, and tell them that you heard about it from Savannah’s Sunshine!

The second great deal is from the newly opened, Plums Restaurant in Bluffton, South Carolina. It’s just a short drive off Highway 95 and exit 8, and it’s well worth the trip! On today and Saturday only, you can purchase one entrée and get the second one (of equal or lesser value) half off! Grab a friend or sweetheart and head on over to Plums! The food is amazing!

While you are planning your weekend and extra fun Monday, be sure to ask merchants whether or not they have any specials or sales that you could benefit from, and you’ll be very glad that you did!

Savannah’s Newest Clothing Designer!

Designer, Narada Howard, has entered the fashion arena, and will soon take the world by storm! His clothing line, Le Koi Noir, is heavily influenced by Savannah’s scenery and style. This unique line of luxury tops for the “cured gentleman” was launched just this summer and has been taking off ever since!

This unique name, Le Koi Noir, represents the essence of the true gentleman.  The website explains how they selected this particular name. The koi fish represents symbols of love, loyalty and friendship. According to an ancient legend, if the koi fish succeeds in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate on The Yellow River, it will be transformed into a dragon. The pursuit of this goal grants him perseverance, strength, and courage. Howard and The Partners wish to convey the necessity of these attributes in today’s modern man. Le Koi Noir’s motto is “don’t’ be a man; be a gentleman.”

It is imperative that you visit this website (www.lekoinoir.com) and experience Le Koi Noir for yourself!

Comcast Advertising Spotlight- Coastal Current

This week was great! I had the awesome opportunity to be interviewed by Nikki White for her cable access show, Coastal Current! This dynamic program airs twice a week on Channel 7 on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8 p.m.  Local entrepreneurs and community servants are featured, sharing information about their businesses and organizations. This is a free service that Comcast provides to give free publicity to Savannah’s movers and shakers. If you’ve ever tried to promote an event or organization, you know that free advertisement is always a wonderful!

During my interview, I discussed an event that I am hosting in September called the Sister Girl’s Social. This monthly networking social is designed to enlighten and empower women of all ages and nationalities. This month’s networking social will be held on Friday, September 7th at 6:30 p.m. at the Rice Hope Community Room (Building 1, 2nd floor). The theme for this month is “Books and Brownies.” Local authors will be in attendance sharing information about their books and answering questions about how they accomplished the wonderful goal of becoming an author. There will be delicious treats and several give-a-ways for attendees. The cost to attend is $5.00, and the proceeds from the event benefit The Village Empowerment Project, the organization of which the Sister Girl’s Social is a component.

For more information about being featured on a segment of Coastal Current,  contact Nikki White at nikki_white@cable.comcast.com.

Savannah’s Shining Stars

Well, it’s back to school time: time to break out the uniforms, pencils, and paper, and prepare for a great school year! I want this year to be 20 times better than last year for the brilliant minds that will grace school halls very soon.
Beginning in October, I will be featuring Savannah’s Shining Stars: young people who are doing great things in their communities and schools. As you know, stars shine bright, even in the midst of darkness. One star by itself sparkles, but joined together, a host of stars illuminate the night’s sky! One awesome young person is great, but when they join together, they are truly a force to be reckoned with. No one will be able to say that the youth of Savannah aren’t doing great things!
To display their shine, a special blog will be posted every week to showcase the positive youth that are impacting our city in a positive way! Those featured will receive a certificate and a prize!
Youth must be nominated by an adult, 21 years of age or older, and each adult may nominate a different Shining Star each week! You don’t have to wait until October to send in a nomination; you can start now! Simply go to the Savannah’s Shining Stars page and email the necessary information to savannahssunshine2012@gmail.com, and your little prince or princess could be featured as one of Savannah’s Shining Stars!

Savannah Mission Yard Sale

For those of you who love yard sales, I’m sure that you passed the Savannah Mission Bible Training Center on Victory Drive and made a quick u-turn when you saw the yard! I know I did. This morning, the Savannah Mission’s yard was full of books, clothes, appliances, and so much more! The proceeds of the yard sale benefit the residents by paying for household necessities. Those who know me know that I am a bookworm, so I headed straight to the book table and found a great hardback treasure.

The Savannah Mission is a part of Mission Teens Inc., a non-profit and non-denominational organization dedicated to helping people with life-controlling problems that are desperate to change. Mission Teens Inc. provides residential assistance and a discipleship training program that, since 1969, has served over 10,000 people. The organization receives no government funding but rather thrives on the donations of concerned citizens who share its goals.

Savannah's Sunshine with
Kyle Lane of Savannah Mission
Although there are locations all over the United States, founder Rev. James D. Bracken began the mission in Norma, New Jersey. After its inception in 1969, it has grown by leaps and bounds, with the focus of helping others by sharing God’s love remaining constant.

Pink Partini

Lindsay Gifford, Senior Graphic
Designer for Pink Magazine and
Savannah's Sunshine
This evening, I had THE BEST time at Pink Partini in Bluffton, South Carolina! I know that I normally blog about events in Savannah, but a trip that is less than 30 minutes away for great fun like I had tonight is worth posting about!

Pink Partini is a monthly social gathering (usually the second Thursday of the month) for Pink Magazine readers and advertisers to chat, network, and enjoy great food and fun. There are always great give-a-ways and discounted Pink Martinis. Each month, the event assumes a different location. Today’s soiree was held at the newly opened, Plums restaurant (www.plumsrestaurant.com)  in Bluffton, South Carolina, and the food was absolutely delicious!
Pink Magazine’s Founder and Publisher, Elizabeth Skenes Millen, does an excellent job of sharing the stories and triumphs of South Carolina’s leading ladies. Her Senior Graphic  Designer, Lindsay Gifford, coordinated this evening’s event, and did an excellent job! The wonderful staff of Pink worked extremely well at creating an evening full of dishing, dining and dancing for all ages.
Plums' Manager, Nate Slichter and
Savannah's Sunshine
Next month’s Pink Partini will be held at Bluffton’s Tanger Outlet near Longhorn’s Steakhouse. I have donated a copy of my book, Diamonds in my Own Backyard, for one of the evening’s give-a-ways, and the winner could be YOU!
For more information about Pink Partini and Pink Magazine, visit www.itsallpink.com!

P.S. Post a positive comment, and your name will be entered in a drawing for a coupon for Plums! FREE appetizer with a dinner entrée!  The drawing will be on Monday, August 13, 2012! Post your comment by noon on Monday, and you could be
            one of the WINNERS!
